NEW OPTIVISION ENCODER CUTS THE HIGH COST OF MPEG-2 ENCODING
New Product Reduces MPEG-2 Data Storage and Transmission by 30 to 60%
PALO ALTO, Calif., October 16, 1995 -- This fall, Optivision Inc., a leading
developer of premium video and image compression technology, will introduce
the OPTIVideo(tm) MPEG-2 Encoder and OPTIVideo MPEG-2 Workstation, offering
state-of-the-art, MPEG-2 realtime encoding. Based upon a new set of microcode
specifically designed and optimized by Optivision, the OPTIVideo MPEG-2
Encoder delivers high quality and low data rate MPEG-2 encoding previously
unavailable in the marketplace. This revolutionary product will dramatically
change the performance expectations and entry level cost of MPEG-2 encoding
for virtually all markets and applications.
The OPTIVideo MPEG-2 Encoder features the groundbreaking CLM4400 chip-set,
jointly developed by Optivision and C-Cube Microsystems, Inc. The CLM4400 is
the industry's first four-chip microcode solution that delivers quality MPEG-2
video at 50 to 60 percent of the cost of traditional broadcast quality MPEG
encoding solutions. The new MPEG-2 Encoder will be available as a fully
configured Workstation and will sell for an estimated U.S. list price of
$45,000. Separate board level OEM pricing is available upon request.
"The launch of Optivision's MPEG-2 Encoder will set new price and performance
standards for MPEG-2 encoding systems," said Keith Masavage, director of
product marketing, Optivision, Inc. "There's an industry-wide momentum behind
MPEG-2 right now, and Optivision is uniquely positioned to offer the
high-quality, cost-effective MPEG-2 encoding solution that the markets are
demanding."
Designed into a fully configured MPEG-2 Workstation, the OPTIVideo MPEG-2
Encoder is a two board set, featuring the Encoder and Optivision's Digital
Video Input Board. Each Workstation supports a wide range of video inputs
including composite, component and digital serial (D-1) as well as
professional level device control. Housed in an industrial quality,
Pentium(tm) based chassis, the OPTIVideo MPEG-2 encoding Workstation delivers
a complete "out-of-the-box" encoding solution. Additionally, a multi-standard
(NTSC/PAL) monitor, VGA monitor, speakers, CD-ROM drive, device control
interface, and more than 2 Gigabytes of disk storage are included with each
Workstation.
According to Dr. Paul Farrelle, Optivision's chief technologist, "Our close
relationship to C-Cube and in-depth knowledge of the microcode has put our
product significantly out in front of the competition. Having written the
four chip microcode for C-Cube while concurrently developing our hardware has
allowed us to design a compact four chip encoder which costs one half to one
third of our competitor's system and reduces data storage and transmission
requirements by 30 to 50 percent."
The OPTIVideo MPEG-2 Workstation offers an array of video and audio
capabilities:
Video
o Composite Video Input and Output
o S-Video Input and Output
o Component Video Input
o Digital Serial (D-1) Video Input (D-1 Output Optional)
o Composite Video Output (Pass Through for Previewing)
o VCR and VTR Device Control
o Adjustable MPEG Data Compression Rates (.6 - 15 mbits/sec)
o "Decode While Encoding" For Realtime Compression Monitoring
Audio
o Stereo Line Level Audio Inputs and Outputs
o Accurate Audio/Video Synchronization
o Control of Input Gain (Volume) Level
o Adjustable Sampling Rates ( 32, 44.1 and 48 kHz)
o Adjustable Audio Data Compression Rates
Each Workstation will support a variety of MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 multiplexing
options including:
o MPEG System (MPEG-1 Content)
o MPEG Transport (MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 Content)
o MPEG-2 Program (MPEG-2 Content)
o PES (Packetized Elementary Streams)
o On-line, Realtime Multiplexing
o Off-line, Non-Realtime Multiplexing
o Single or Multiple Video Stream Multiplexing, Non-Realtime
o Support For Single Track or Multiple Track Audio Encoding
The OPTIVideo MPEG-2 Workstation also includes Optivision's mpegStudio v.2.0
software, optimized to provide video preprocess filtering, enhanced VTR
control, enhanced scene change detection, decode-while-encode capabilities and
other advanced features. Each Workstation comes equipped with one of
Optivision's new OPTIVideo MPEG-2 Genlock Decoders.
The OPTIVideo MPEG-2 Encoder and MPEG-2 Workstation will be available for
customer sampling in October 1995. Full product roll out will follow in early
November to coincide with Comdex/Fall `95, Telecon XV and the Western Cable
shows. Additional integration of the MPEG-2 Encoder into Optivision's line of
video transmission systems will take place in the November/December time
frame.
